Examination and treatment planning

After getting to know you, and what you expect for your oral health, we will have a look at your mouth. This will involve examining your teeth and gums. Every now and then we will advise x rays and scanning of your teeth. If it's not broken, we prefer not to fix it. Every mouth is different, and if treatment is needed we will work with you to find a solution that works for your individual needs.

Scaling and cleaning

Hygiene treatments involve cleaning away tartar and plaque away from the tooth surface, above and below the gum line. Once this has been done your teeth will be polished to leave them feeling smooth and to remove as much external staining as possible. This is usually done in a single appointment, but in some cases may need to be done over the course of 2 x 30 minute appointments.

Fillings

Drill and fill: fillings are a common dental treatment to fix a hole in your tooth caused by decay. Utmost care is taken to make sure that the right amount of decay is removed, while preserving as much of your healthy tooth structure as possible. We then use a range of materials to rebuild your tooth. Filling appointments can take between 30-45 minutes depending on the size and difficulty of the filling.

Tooth Extraction

We offer simple extraction with local anaesthetic injections. Sometimes this can be done at an emergency appointment, or may require a consultation and a second appointment. Tooth removal usually requires a 30-60 minute appointment. If an extraction looks difficult, we will arrange for you to be seen by a local oral surgeon. Oral surgeons can also arrange for your tooth to be removed while being sedated in a hospital.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve in a tooth dies, or becomes diseased. The nerve is removed, and the interior of the tooth is then cleaned and filled. This is done in between 1-3 appointments, with each appointment between 45 - 60 minutes long. Once the root of the tooth has been filled, it is often wise to place a crown over the remaining tooth to restore its strength and to prevent infection from re-entering into the tooth.

TMJ

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) encompasses a range of issues that can result in jaw pain, headaches, generalised tooth sensitivity and jaw clicking/locking/dislocations. TMJ can be caused by injury, arthritis and stress related habits. Treatment of TMJ can involve medication, relaxation, jaw exercised, specialised mouth guards and muscle relaxant therapy. for simple and complex cases we work with local specialists to try and manage your symptoms. We usually start with a 30 minute consultation, and then require further appointments depending what direction of treatment is needed.
